Desperate times call for creative minds!

--By Emily Moldy

If you don't know them for their dope music or community activism here in Oakland, you should recognize them from blogs about the U.S. Social Forum (on YMR's website which you should be checking out daily!) They are: AJ Thrower (YMR) and Tania Pulido (RYSE)... and they are two of many Bay Area youth who attended this year's U.S. Social Forum, where they spent time with thousands of other artists, activists, and like-minded folks who are SERIOUSLY ready to change the world..

It's true that now, more than ever, young folks have a powerful voice in movement towards changing our worlds. Here at YMR we talk a lot about movement (like "youth movement" "social movement", etc).. but what exactly is this movement? Where is it going? What does it look like?

This past Monday, YMR hosted a meeting in the lab for anyone to come and listen to what AJ, Tania, and YMR's Video Coordinator, Dan Reilly had to say about their journey to the East Coast to represent YMR at the U.S. Social Forum in Detroit, MI. They brought back with them a contagious energy talking about being creative to make changes in their communities, neighborhoods, and throughout the country. Bono of U2 once said, "This is a time for bold measures. This is the country, and you are the generation.” Imagine if we actually came together with our art (whatever form of art that may be) to use as both our medicine for healing and weapon for resistance, and imagine if we got to brainstorming... we really could run this town.

Lyfe Productives (LP) and Hot Water Cornbread (HWC), in association with Youth Movement Records (YMR), have channeled their artistic resources to present “Pistols and Prayers,” a profound performance piece interweaving Spoken Word, African-American Folk Spirituals, Classical Music and Hip-Hop onto one stage at the Historic Fox Theater in celebration of the African Diaspora!

A stage piece based on the newly published self-titled book by one of the nation's greatest young writers, “Pistols and Prayers” is an impressive production accompanied musically by the African-American folk spirituals of internationally renowned artist Melanie Demore, young Master Cellist, Michael Fecskes and radio personality/deejay DC Coleman from KMEL’s 106.1FM.

Building our Digital Media & Literature Library

Youth Movement Records (YMR) is in the process of building a new digital media and literature library for our youth. Making these materials available to YMR members, who otherwise would not have access, is an important part of their development into successful artists and adults. In addition, the creation of YMR's new library will help extend and promote artistic learning from beyond our workshops and headquarters here at the Fox. Our current donors include Focal Press, Alfred Music Publishing and various individuals with donations ranging from instructional materials to documentary DVDs.

You can help and join the movement to build our library, too! YMR has created an Amazon Wish List which includes items that we would love to carry in our library. Just go to YMR's Amazon Wish List and select which item(s) you would like to purchase and Amazon will send them directly to YMR. Your generosity is greatly appreciated as YMR wouldn't be possible without supporters like you.

Futures Expo at Laney College

On April 14th, YMR partnered with Laney College and the Chinatown Youth Center Initiative (CYCI) to bring an all-inclusive futures planning conference to over 500 local high school and college-aged youth.

The Expo included resume-writing workshops, a career planning clinic, a keynote address from human rights activist and emcee Kiwi Illafonte, and over 50 vendors from local and corporate employers and community-based organizations.

In addition to event planning expertise, YMR youth, LeRon “Ron G” Blankenship, Ben “WatzReal” White, and Princeton Maharam provided lunchtime entertainment to Futures Expo attendees. Our partnership with Laney College and the CYCI has proven valuable and will continue on in order to provide youth-relevant activities and resources in the future.
